One census indicates born Nov 1848, but not in 1851 census. Age in
1861 and 1881 census indicates born about 1852.
Living with his sister, Margaret Shaw in 1861. This is how we make the tenuous
connection to Mary Swale/Swales of Swainby/Whorlton.
In 1871, Wife Mary and daughter Annie are listed as Swales, and living with
Mary's parents. Thomas is not with them. There is a Thomas Smith,
age 19, born in Swainby,a servant, living with another family in Easby.
I suspect this might be our Thomas. Everything fits but the last name.
Either he gave his name as Smith, or it was really mistranscribed.

Came to the US in 1887/88 with a Frances and John. There is a T. (or J.) Swales
on the steamship Wyoming, 25 Apr 1888, with two children, Francis an John, ages
15 and 7 respectively. The only problem is that Francis is listed as male,
and located in forward steerage, which is consistent with being male. T. Swales'
profession is hard to read, but may be miner (or minister).
Frances appears to have two illegitimate sons with different fathers
in the 1900 census, William J. and Thomas H.
Frances M. born Apr 1872
John T. born Jan 1874 ??
William J. born Jun 1893
Thomas H. born Aug 1896
Herbert Harry born about 1882
Eva (middle initial A or M) born about 1883 (not in 1901 census!)
Maud Louise born about 1886
Maud married David Evans C.1907. They are in the 1910,1920 & 1930 census in Nanticoke
with a bunch of kids. Their son James was in the 1910 census twice, once with
them, and once with Thomas.
Elsie (Elsie May in 1901 census) born about 1888.
