Most records indicate she was born in Ontario, Canada, however there was a Lucy Brinklow christened in the first quarter of 1870, in Woburn, Bedfordshire, just miles from where her Brother George was born. Lucy was the sister of George Brinklow, first husband of DeEtte Buckingham, who came to the US in 1890, apparently. DeEtte later married Melvin Charles Dopp, brother of George Emerson Dopp. George was born in England, as was a cousin, William Brinklow, who was living in Canada with wife Hannah (Daly) in 1881, and in Sandy Creek, Oswego County in 1900. Based on the location and time their children were born, they came to the US between 1887 and 1891. From the 1901 Canadian census, it looks like all of these English Brinklows came to Canada in 1868. 20 May 1886, Lucy, age 16, was admitted to the Oswego County Poor House. She was pregnant. I don't find any sign of her in Oswego County (or elsewhere) in 1892, and no indication that she had given birth in later census records. There is a Lucy Boyd, born in Canada, age 20 living in Richland in 1892, but this seems a stretch. Her parents were born in England. She was living with my grandparents Howard and Grace (Dopp) West in 1925, but returned to Canada by 1926, to live with her brothers there. Grace was her step-daughter. |
