Protestant baptisms were apparently not recorded in Swanage prior to 1794, accounting for no record of John's birth. John's middle name has been something of a mystery, but it certainly appears that he was named for the Rev. John Morrison, a Protestant minister in Swanage, whose wife was Elizabeth Bonfield. The witnesses at their marriage were Samuel and Dorothy Bonfield (who had married the year before). Both Samuel and Elizabeth had been widowed. It is possible they were siblings, which (if all the speculative relationships are correct), would make John Morrison the great uncle of John Moriston Bonfield. It appears, though, that the Morrisons were also related to the George Serrel Bonfield family, so this remains to be sorted out.
