She was born Violet Alice West, but listed in 1911 as Violet Alice Swales, granddaughter of William and Elizabeth Peverley Swales. Violet was the daughter of Alice Elizabeth West, who was an unmarried waitress at the time of Violet's birth. Three years later, she is living with William and Elizabeth and Alfred, who was 25 and unmarried. My belief is that she was the illegitimate daughter of Alfred, prior to their marriage, but it is also possible there is some other explanation. |
