birth date differs on various sources, including death certificate, which lists age as 80 years, 8 months, 2 days, which would indicate 30 Aug 1839, however a number of sources suggest that the year was 1838. Not sure this Charles in Lee in 1860 is the same, one, but the age is correct. in his invalid pension application, he states that he lived in Lee for 4 years prior to his enlistment, and in Oswego Town for the last year before his enlistment. That would have put him in Lee from C.1859 to C.1862 and in Oswego Town in 1862-1863. marriage performed by Rev. James Erwin age at enlistment was 24 According to his invalid pension application, he lived in Orwell from his discharge in 1865 to the spring of 1882. Orwell historian mentioned a daughter, but no name. Census records do not show this. claimed to be 40 on 25 Aug 1881, which seems too young by at least 2 years. Mailing address in 1920 was R.F.D. 6, Oswego Township, Oswego County, NY. may have died in Volney cause of death; apoplexy, arteriosclerosis Found in 1880 census on Orwell with a group of other Wests. In his Civil War diary, he mentions cousin Sanford, and William his son mentions Uncle Monroe several times, in the same diary. We now know that Uncle Monroe is a reference to James Monroe Phillips, who is the brother of Elizabeth Phillips Dopp, mother of Frances Amelia Dopp West, William's mother. James went by the name Monroe, and would have been William's great uncle. Cousin Sanford is still a mystery, however, if the Eliza A. Smith whois buried in Lorena Road Cemetery is Charles' mother, then cousin Sanford is Sanford Smith, the son of David and Susan Smith, Eliza's brother and sister-in-law. He would be a first cousin of Charles. Notes from Orwell historian: Charles E. West, born August 19, 1839 in Annsville, Oneida County, died May 1, 1920, son of Ira West and Lucy Curtis.
