Sarah's birth was registered on 28 Jan 1850. Her mother, Priscilla Ward, nee Coverdale signed with an X. There appears to be no Sarah Ann Ward in the 1861 census, however, there is a Sarah Wade, a servant at a farm in Farndale, south of Guisborough, who is about the right age, and born in Stokesley. There is no Sarah Wade in the 1851 Stokesley census, and also, apparently no record of a Sarah Wade born in Stokesley around 1849-1850, so it is quite likely this is our Sarah. The 1900 census indicates she had had 7 children, 4 of whom were living. The seventh child is probably Priscilla Swales, christened 13 May 1878, died Sep quarter of 1878, age 0, but might also be Sarah Ann Swales, who died in the Sep quarter of 1884, age 1. Sarah's cause of death is listed as Lobar Pneumonia. Obituary (Scranton Times, 8 Feb 1926, P5C3 no.131): Mrs. Sarah A. Swales, widow of Thomas Swales, died at her home 337 Keystone avenue, Peckville, at 5:45 o'clock Sunday morning after a short illness. The deceased was seventy-six years of age and had been a resident of Peckville for the past thirty-five years where she was held in high esteem by all who knew her. She is survived by two sons, William W., of Peckville, and Ernest, of Kingston, Pa., and one daughter, Mrs. Alice Hartman, also of Peckville; eight grandchildren and two great-grandchildren. The funeral will be held Tuesday afternoon at 2:30 o'clock and the First M. E. church in charge of Rev. L. N. Underwood. |
