Although one census indicates Berwick-(up)on-Tweed, I think it more likely he was born in the hamlet of (Ingleby) Barwick in the parish of Stainton, west of Guisborough. Another census indicates Hilton-Stockton. Hilton is another small town, just south of Ingleby Barwick. Another census says Barrack on Tees. Ingleby Barwick is on the Tees.
