Parish registers of the birth of William, Hannah E. and Mary show Daniel's profession as Shoemaker, as does marriage record for Daniel and Elizabeth. His marriage to Elizabeth in 1842 was witnessed by William Swales, probably Daniel's brother William, and Ann Herbert. It is possible that Ann Herbert was his sister Ann, about whom I have very little other information. Interestingly there seems to be no Ann Herbert in the area in the 1841 census. Elizabeth and her parents and sister are also in the 1841 census, in nearby Saltburn. In the 1851 census, Daniel's profession looks like Flour Dealer's Assistant, but the first word is very hard to read. Margaret Fenney who is living with them in 1861 is the daughter of Charlotte & William Fenny, born 23 Feb 1858. The 1871 census shows Daniel Swales, age 61, living in Guisborough on Stump Cross, as a lodger of Mary Hayes, and his profession looks like Coal Porter. The 1881 census shows Daniel Swales, age 71, inmate of Hospital of Alms, 30 Church Walk, The Hospital of Jesus, Guisborough. This Hospital of Jesus was established in 1561 along with a Grammer School, by Robert Pursglove, the last Prior of Guisborough, specifically to house 6 poor, single persons of each sex. At the time of the 1881 census, there were 6 men and 5 women being housed there, all widow(er)s. It seems the buildings there were torn down and replaced in 1887. The Prior Pursglove College is now at the old site of the Grammer School and Hospital of Jesus, and still listed at Church Walk. The cause of death listed on his death certificate is "Natural Decay". He died in the home of his son Thomas, at 20 Bolchow Street, N. Skelton. The gravestone in St. Peters Churchyard, Brotton lists Daniel's wives and some of his children (see Daniel's father William for details), but not Daniel. He may be buried near N. Skelton, or in Guisborough. He has not been found on any of the cemetery lists currently available. Distinct ancestors in tree: 18
