Notes:
date of birth difficult. Here is what the census shows:
 1850 age 48, ~1802
 1855 age 52, ~1803
 1860 age 56, ~1804
 1870 age 69, ~1801
 1870 age 79, ~1801
Samuel and Hannah's marriage was performed by Rev. Mr. Mitchell.
According to the 1865 census, there had been 3 more children (total of 7), which
jives with the two extra children (a boy and a girl) in the 1840 census.
1850 census lists Samuel as Thos., but pretty sure it's the sam person.
His children's ages are not consistent across the census records:
 1850: Permelia 14 (or 18?), George 16, Martha 8, Emma 4
 1855: George 20, Martha 11, Emma 9
 1860: George 24, Emma 15

Felts Mills is in the Town of Rutland, east of Watertown, on the Black River.

We believe Samuel is probably the son of Levi and Kezia Stearns, who
came from Massachusetts via New Hampshire, and lived in most of the
same towns as Samuel. There is a link here to the family of Lyman
Stearns, who we believe is Samuel's brother. In 1880, the neighbor's
of Samuel and Hannah are William and Hannah Gillette. Their daughter
Clara L. married Frederick J. Stearns, grandson of Lyman Stearns. Samuel
would have been Frederick's great uncle, and Frederick would be Georgianna
 Stearns second cousin.
