Thanks to Betty Adams, we recently discovered that, in 1860, Frances was working in a cotton mill near New Hartford, Oneida County. She was just 17, and the Mill was quite a way to the south of Lee, where her parents still lived. It was in the town of New York Mills. There were several large and successful cotton mills there throughout the 1800's and into the 1900's. The census shows her as Frances Doff, but it is almost certainly her. Two years later, she was married to Charles E. West. found in 1880 census with Charles E & William. also in 1900 census with Charles & Melvin. Census shows 2 children, both living. William & family are next door. mailing address in 1920 was R.F.D. 6, Oswego Township, Oswego County, NY cause of death; endocarditis and arteriosclerosis attended at her death by a nurse, Emma Dopp, possibly Melvin Dopp's daughter Distinct ancestors in tree: 69
