Although one record of his birth says he was born in Pillar Point, Jefferson County, and the 1850 census indicates he was born in NY, the 1855 census says Vermont, so it seems most likely he was from VT since he was married there, in 1806. Also, the area around Brownville had not been settled yet in 1785, and was, in fact, in the possession of the Oneidas. Still, he served for NY in the War of 1812. Brownville is named for Jacob Brown, who was a colonel in the 108th NY Militia, the same one in which Seth Cummings served. Brown was later a major-general. |
